First Night With the Indians was formed by friends David Tomlinson and Mark Tweedale in Liverpool. They started writing songs and gigging as a 3-piece, but their drummer soon quit.

Keith Nuttall (Cloudburst/Back to the Grind) had known Mark since school, and he introduced them to his drummer friend Dave Veitch. Disappointed with the short lives of his previous Liverpool bands Paddy's Wigwam and The Temple City Moose Club, Keith invited himself along to the first rehearsal. He successfully added complimentary guitar and synthesiser parts, and was invited to join. The band played at the Sphinx Bar (at Liverpool University) to a very receptive audience.

They were featured and interviewed on a Radio Merseyside alternative music programme, but they disbanded a few weeks later, due to personal commitments.
